The Netherlands is looking eagerly for innovative ways of obtaining new types of fuel. Talented students of the TU Eindhoven are working on a sustainable technology which could offer a possible solution for industrial gas users. This new fuel type is iron powder.
ABOUT THE COLLABORATION
The successful collaboration contains an investigative team of eager students who noticed the concept of metal fuels. Fundamental research was being conducted at McGill University in Canada and that Groupe PSA in France was focused on the search for engines running on magnesium powder. Sincerely believing in the social potential of metal fuels, the students of the TU Eindhoven founded SOLID.

ABOUT THE BENEFITS
This iron powder is an alternative fuel type and can be reused completely, including the residual product. All iron oxide that remains after combustion is collected and used in addition to store energy. It is a completely circular process without CO2 emissions. The fuel types used now can rise to high temperatures, this remains a factor that needs to be taken into consideration when searching for new fuel alternatives. Lucky, for iron powder, excessive temperatures are feasible and is also a suitable alternative for many industries.
ABOUT THE OUTCOME
Apart from the results mentioned above, this collaboration has not made any other results made public. This collaboration is still investigating, testing and expanding how iron powder fuel can be merely used as fuel type.
ABOUT THE RESEARCH
The eager students carefully designed a successful installation that burns iron, which inevitably generates hot water, heat hand electricity. All other processes from this cycle already exist. Namely, the production of iron and recycling of rust. The installation of team SOLID represents the final phase in this circular process.
Excess renewable energy, for solar panel energy, can be stored by turning rust (iron oxide) into iron. This way, iron can serve as fuel when energy is required.
