COLLABORATION CASE: How to take care of Nuclear fuel Waste in Canada?

ABOUT THE TOPIC
Managing fuel waste, in the long run, can give some challenges and needs to be handled with care. This led to the establishment of NWMO, Nuclear Waste Management Organization- Canada, a collaborative coworking in Canada to find a solution which Canada can manage its Nuclear waste in a manner that is socially acceptable, environmentally responsible, economically feasible and technical possibilities.

ABOUT THE COLLABORATION
The NFWA requires nuclear fuel waste owners – OPG, HQ, NB Power, and AECL – to provide segregated trust funds in order to finance the long-term management of used fuel. The waste owners make an annual contribution and their financial statements are made public on their website.  In May 2019, NWMO set up a program that provided information, built awareness about APM and the siting process among Canadiens and where questions from the community could be answered

ABOUT THE OUTCOME
This collaboration created several outcomes. The first one is the awareness and establishment of an Information Centre. Secondly, this collaboration has created a formula to determine how deposits are needed to pay for the APM implementation every year.  Thirdly, the founding of an independent advisory council. This advisory council will comment on the organization’s work, write reports based on those outcomes and ensure these reports are made public. Moreover, the advisory board provides ongoing advice and guidance on the plans and activities from NWMO. And last but not least, this project was created with the help and knowledge sharing from Canadians from all coast.

ABOUT THE BENEFITS
This collaboration has created solutions that included the participation of the Canadian community and led NWMO to learn and share knowledge from different aspects. It allows the citizens, nuclear waste owners and the government to design a well-structured and clear plan on how to approach, manage and deal with Nuclear waste on long-term.

This plan also included the development of a used fuel transportation system

 ABOUT THE RESEARCH
The NWMO studied approaches for the long-term management of used nuclear fuel that was already used. Afterwards, NFWA submits their findings to the Government of Canada and the Minister of Natural Resources about their long-term management approach designed. This idea was created after a three-year dialogue with Canadians from coast to coast. The management system involves realistic, manageable phases, each marked by clear decision points with continuous participation from interested Canadians. Furthermore, this plan also included the development of a used fuel transportation system to transport used nuclear fuel to the repository site.

ABOUT THE PARTNERS
Ontario Power Generation (OPG), New Brunswick Power Corporation, and Hydro-Québec (HQ) founded the NWMO. Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), and Ministry of Natural Resources and Canada coast communities.

 DATE
The results of this collaboration were made public in March 2017.
